Common Koel

Eudynamys scolopacea

The Common Koel’s habitat is varied and includes rainforest, scrub, open forest, woodland, fruiting tress, parks and gardens.

The Common Koel has a distinctive red-eye set against glossy blue-black feathers for males and brown speckled feathers for females.

Koel’s are canopy dwellers and feed on fruits, particularly figs.

Common Koel’s are migratory birds who arrive in south-east Queensland to breed. Their migration signals the coming of the wet season, and summer storms, except during drought. Their distinctive call is heard during mating, and on the precipice of rain. Females leave the responsibility of raising her chick to other birds, and lay her eggs in foreign nests.
