Bunya Pine

Araucaria Bidwillii

The Bunya Pine can be found in substantial numbers in the Bunya Mountains in Queensland, and are also found in other forests and urban sites.

Bunya Pines are an ancient tree from the Jurassic period that produce pine cones weighing up to ten kilograms and can drop without warning. The Bunya Pine cone contains a nut which can be eaten, and the tree and nut were important to indigenous people.

Bunya branches and leaves create a tall dome shape, and the trees range in height from twenty to fifty metres tall. Their leaves are a deep green – but beware! They are sharp.
