Bearded Mudskipper

Scartelaos histophorus

These mudskippers can be found in mudflats and mangroves. They are amphibious fish that can happily survive both in and out of water.

The Bearded Mudskipper comes in a greenish to grey colour, with dark spots and bands across the body. The have barbels under the mouth.

They are omnivorous and feed on diatoms and small invertebrates as well as aquatic plants.

Males attract females to their burrows at low tide by raising themselves up on their tails. Tall mast-like dorsal fin is raised when creeping.
